Types of Websites
There are many different types of websites and many definitions to describe each of the websites. This instructional program will focus on three types of websites including wikis, blogs, and websites using site builders. Please note that each type of website may have more than one definition. The definitions and descriptions used have been selected for the purposes of this program to meet the needs of creating websites. Again, these are not the only definitions, but the ones that will be used throughout this instructional program. Below, please find an overview of the three different types of websites. Each summary contains a little history about the corresponding website type, their definitions, and corresponding programs or site editors that allow the website type to be created. After reading the summaries, please take a moment to participate in the quiz located to the right to see which website is best for you! This is just a suggestion, so please feel free to read about the different kinds of websites and create the one that you think best suits your needs. |
Wikis
In 1994, Howard G. "Ward" Cunningham created the first wiki in which he released in 1995, and gave it the name WikiWikiWeb. In Hawaiian, wiki means quick or fast. He developed this concept to facilitate an easy way for computer programmers to exchange ideas between one another.
A wiki can be a noun or a verb when describing the term and its meaning. As a noun, wikis are web pages that are generally simple in design and hyperlinked together in which groups, friends, and families can edit together. Editing of the wiki pages can be done via the browser, with a version history for each page. As a verb, one who wikis is either researching a topic or contributing to an already existing wiki.
All users are able to edit any of the wikipages in a wiki collection, as well as create new wikipages within the wiki collection. A wiki is designed for the visitor to become involved in the ongoing process of the creation and collaboration of the constantly changing wiki.
There are many types of free wiki software that is available to use, all with different capabilities, but the same overall concept. Should you choose to create a wiki, you can use the Comparison of wiki software or WikiMatrix to compare different types of wiki software. These references will allow you to research different wiki software to ensure you choose the one that best meets your needs for your instruction.
Many websites on the Internet rank wiki software as being in the top five, ten, or twenty five. There is no comprehensive list as to which wiki software is the top one because everyone has different needs. In this instructional program, two different types of wiki software that have been recommended on many of these sites have been included. Each will be discussed on their features and their ability to create a wiki. The two wiki software's that will be discussed include Wikispaces and Wikidot. All can be used on a PC or Mac, so no worries!

Blogs
In the beginning blogs were known was weblogs. The term was thought up by Jorn Barger in December 1997. It was then shortened in 1999 to blog by Peter Merholz. Merholz took the word weblog and broke it up into the phrase "we blog,' which is how the term blog came about.
While there are many ways to define a blog, it can be considered a noun or a verb when describing the term and its meaning. As a noun, a blog is a type of website that provides information and is updated regularly. Often blogs are written in a narrative form and can contain videos, links, and graphics. The information can be displayed in chronological or reverse chronological order. As a verb, someone who blogs is the one who owns the blog and updates it regularly with the information of his or her choosing using words, graphics, videos, and so forth.
Blogs can be created using a variety of blogging websites that range in degree of complexity. This instructional program will focus on two well-known blog sites including Wordpress and LiveJournal. There are many types of blogging sites that can be found on the World Wide Web; however, these are the two primary blogging sites that will be discussed in this instructional program.

Websites
Tim Berners-Lee, a consultant to the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN developed the World Wide Web in the 1980s, but became widely popular in the 1990s. He created this World Wide Web for the physicists at CERN to share information between one another who were located around the world.
The World Wide Web is comprised of what we call websites. A website is a group of World Wide Web pages that is located on the Internet. They usually contain hyperlinks to one another other and made available online by an individual, company, educational institution, government, or organization. Websites are generally maintained by one person or organization that focus on a single topic or several closely related topics. They can be can be very simple or very complex depending on your needs, your learner needs, and any constraints.
Websites can be created using simple site editors such as Weebly and Webnode, or can be created using complex HTML editors, such as Adobe Dreamweaver. There is a website creator that is available for learners who have little to no skills creating websites and for learners who have advanced skills in creating websites. This instructional program will focus on two site editors including Weebly and Webnode. Again, there are many types of site creators and HTML creators, which can be found by searching the World Wide Web.
Please note this instructional site will not focus on the complex HTML website editors as they require much more time to learn and are very complex. Should you decide you are up for the challenge, I highly recommend Adobe Dreamweaver, although it is not free of charge.
