Weebly
Welcome to creating a website using Weebly. Please use the information below to help begin setting up your website. This is a general overview to acquaint you with one of the two website site editor programs discussed in this program, Weebly.
Please note there are two types of websites you can create using Weebly. Weebly allows users to create websites strictly for educational purposes or for personal and business uses. Weebly Educator can only be used by educators who are teaching, whereas Weebly can be used by anyone free of charge. The two editors have the same capabilities.
Should you need additional assistance with creating and setting up your website, you can visit Weebly's Support page or contact the author/instructor of this instructional program.
You are able to click on each of the images below. There are some images that will expand in size to give you a better view at what is being discussed, or you will be brought to the respective page with a designated URL link.
Step One:
|
Weebly can be used by individuals, businesses, and educators alike. Websites using Weebly can be created by individuals for personal use or professional use. Just like many other sites, a user can select to create a website for free or one with cost options. In order to join Weebly, you must register. As mentioned above, you can create a website using Weebly or Weebly Educator. You can sign up for Weebly or Weebly Educator. Once you sign up, you will be able to begin creating your website. First, you must sign up for a Weebly account using Weebly or Weebly Educator. Whichever one you choose to create, you must fill out all necessary information. Remember, this instructional program uses Weebly and not Weebly Educator to meet the needs of all educators, classroom and corporate. |
Step Two:
In order to create an account with Weebly, you must sign up for an account. Once you get to the homepage of your choice as mentioned above, fill in all necessary information and then click "Sign Up, It's Free!" You will then be prompted to enter in two security words to verify that you are human. After you enter in the two words, click "OK, let's go!" to begin creating your website! |
Step Three:
|
Upon signing up for a Weebly account, you we be prompted to create a title for your website. With a free account, you are able to sign up for two separate websites free of charge. Think of a name for your website and enter it in to the space. Next, you will be able to select the type of website you are creating. For purposes of this instructional program, Education has been selected. Then select the type of category as completed below. There are several choices you have, but for purposes of this instructional program, the category Teacher has been selected. Once done, click "Continue" to be brought to the next step of your website page. |
Step Four:
You are now required to choose your website domain. The domain which you choose will allow users to access it on the World Wide Web. There are several options that Weebly offers, including free and paid ones. If you wish, you can select a subdomain of Weebly. This will be free of charge and will incorporate the Weebly name into your website address. If the name is available, a green check mark with the word "Available" will appear. You can also register a new domain. This will not have the Weebly name in your website address, but this option is not free of charge. You can change the website name to whatever you wish for it to be. Again, a green check mark with the word "Available" will appear if the name is available. Lastly, you can use a domain name that you already own. If you have already purchased a domain, you may use that for your new website. After selecting the appropriate domain or subdomain that best meets your need click "Continue" to continue creating your website page! |
Step Five:
|
Congratulations! You have now completed registration steps to create a free website with Weebly. You will be brought to the homepage of your website where you can immediately start creating your site. There are many different things you can do with your site. Prior to building your site, it is recommended to select a layout that best suits your needs and desires. |
Step Seven:
|
There are several different themes you can choose from a wide variety of categories. Search through all categories or all themes to find a theme of your liking. Each theme will allow you to customize various things, including the pre-selected pictures. If you do not like the picture that is included, you are able to edit the image with an image you like. Select a category you wish to view themes for. This instructional program has selected "Education" as the category of themes. After selecting "Education," all themes for this category will be displayed. You can look at each thumbnail to get an overview of the different themes available for this category. If you hover over the thumbnail, you will be presented a "Preview" button. This will allow you to preview your site using this theme before actually selecting it. Once you click the preview button on a theme you wish to view, you will see a preview of your website with the design that you selected. If you wish to use this theme for your site, you can click "Use Theme." When you click "Use Theme," the theme will be applied to your website page. If you wish to continue looking around for other themes, but really like this one, you can save it to your favorites by clicking "Favorite." You will be brought back to the theme page to select a different page. If you wish to do nothing with this theme, you can click "Cancel." If you click cancel, you will be brought back to the theme page to select a different theme. For purposes of this instructional program, we will use this theme. |
Step Eight:
Now that you have selected a theme that works for your website, you can begin editing your website! To begin designing your page, click the "Elements" tab located at the top. There are Basic, Multimedia, Revenue, and More elements that can be added to your website. You can click on the respective tab located in the left column to view the different types of elements you can add to your website. Below, find a list of each major category of elements with both free and paid elements that can be added to your website. To use any of the options except the paid options (unless you have paid for your website), you click and drag the element of your choice to your website. To use the paid options, you must sign up and pay for Weebly Pro. Basic Elements

Step Nine:
|
You can publish your website at any time. If you are working on it and you wish to see what it would look like on the web, click the orange "Publish" button located in the top right corner. This will publish your website using the website address you specified. Every time you make updates to your website, you will want to click the "Publish" button to ensure the most recent, updated version of your website is published to the World Wide Web. If you are a free member, a pop-up window will appear with an address written in blue at the top along with another option below it. The website address on top in blue is the subdomain of weebly that was initially selected to create the website account. This is the "free" website Uniform Resource Locator (URL) link that will allow you to access your website on the World Wide Web. Click this blue link to publish and view your website on the World Wide Web. If you wish to pay for a specified domain name without the word Weebly in the URL link, you can click the address with the green "available" check mark. You will then be taken to a page to purchase this website domain. Remember that you do NOT have to pay for a domain for your website to appear on the World Wide Web. As mentioned before, click the blue link to access your free website address! |
Step Ten:
Managing and adding pages to your Weebly website is easy! You can add as many pages and subpages as you would like! To add a page, click the "Pages" tab in the top of the toolbar. Once you click the "Pages" tab, you will be brought to the "Manage Pages" section. Here, you can add a page, add a subpage, edit your page, copy a page, delete a page, and more. To add a page, click the "Add Page" button near the top left corner under "Manage Pages." By clicking this, a second page will pop up under your "Home" page. You must name your page, and you can do so in the space provided. After you enter in your page name, you can either hit the "Edit Page" button located above the space where you entered in your page name, or at the bottom where you can click "Save Settings." If you click "Edit Page," you will automatically be taken to your newly created page. If you click "Save Settings," you will be brought to your homepage. If you have created a page, and want to copy everything on that page including the content, click the page you wish to copy and the click the "Copy Page" button, which is located next to the "Edit Page." This will copy your page exactly. Your newly copied page will be located at the bottom of all your pages. If you wish to delete a page, click the page you wish to delete and then click the "Delete Page" button, which is located next to the "Copy Page." You can easily move your pages around. Any page that you create will automatically be aligned with the homepage button. This will ensure the page created is a main page located on the navigation toolbar. If you wish to create a subpage, you must click and drag the page to the right. For example, under "Name Your Page!" a "Step One" has been added. Notice it appears to be indented and there is an "L" shaped line connecting the "Name Your Page!" to the "Step One" page. This ensures that the "Step One" page is a subpage of the "Name Your Page!" You can easily move pages by dragging them up and down to reorder them, or left and right to create subpages. It is never too late to move pages around, even after you have added the content! |
|
Step Eleven:
|
While in the "Manage Pages" section mentioned above, you can manage your pages further. If you wish, you can hide your page from the navigation bar, which displays your published pages on the navigation toolbar. If you wish to hide your page, make sure you click the check box next to "Hide page in navigation menu." If you wish to password protect your page, you must have a Weebly Pro account, as this is a paid feature. If you do have a Weebly Pro account and you have this feature, check "Password protect this page" if you wish to add a password to the page. Finally, if you wish to create an external link to your page, so your users are brought to a different website, you can add a link that will link your page to an external site. Once you click the check box, you will be prompted to add in an website URL address. If you wish to add advance settings to your page, you can click "Advanced Settings" written in blue under all the check boxes. A pop up screen will appear with the following information.
Enter in the pieces of information you wish to include and then click "Save Settings." You have now managed this particular page. To manage your other pages, you must click on each page individually and apply the settings you wish to include. Each page can be customized to meet the needs of you and your learners. |
Step Twelve:
In addition to managing the individual pages of your website, you can also manage your website in its entirety. To manage your website in its entirety, click the "Settings" tab. You will automatically be brought to the "General Settings" to manage your site settings. In your General Settings, as a free member, you can
If you are a member of Weebly Pro, or a paid member, you can
Once you are done editing the general information of your website, click "Save." As a free member, you can then continue editing your site by choosing another major setting, such as Search Engine Optimization, Ecommerce, Mobile, and/or Archive/Un-publish. Under Search Engine Optimization (SEO), you are able to:
Once you edit the settings you wish to in Search Engine Optimization, make sure you click the "Save" button as mentioned in general settings. If you choose to sell items through your website, you can set up a place for users to pay you either through Google checkout or Paypal. You can choose the currency in which you will accept. Remember to click "Save" if any changes are made. Many of your learners will have smartphones, a phone that acts as both a mobile phone and personal digital assistant. Due to the capabilities, many of your learners will be able to access the website on their smartphones. By default, your website already enables mobile phones to display the mobile-optimized version of this website when they visit it from their mobile device. If you wish to not have this option, you may uncheck the box. You are also able to change the theme color of the mobile-optimized version. It is all up to you! Remember to click "Save" if you make any changes. Lastly, you can archive or un-publish your website if you choose. If you wish to download your site as a .zip archive, so it can be used later, you can click the "download" button. This will allow you to download the site, and use it offline. If you wish to un-publish your site from the World Wide Web, you may choose to do so by clicking "Un-publish Site." This will remove your website from the World Wide Web. |
