Wikidot
Welcome to creating a wiki using Wikidot. Please use the information below to help begin setting up your wiki. This is a general overview to acquaint you with one of the two wiki software programs discussed in this program, Wikidot.
Should you need additional assistance, you can visit Wikidot's About page or contact the author/instructor of this instructional program.
You are able to click on each of the images below. There are some images that will expand in size to give you a better view at what is being discussed, or you will be brought to the respective page with a designated URL link.
Step One:
|
Wikidot can be used by individuals, businesses, and educators alike. Wikis using Wikidot can be created by individuals for personal use. Just like many other sites, a user can select to create a wiki for free or one with cost options, known as a pro wiki. In order to join Wikidot, you must register. Once you sign up, you will be able to begin creating your wiki. First, you must go to the wiki homepage, Wikidot. Select the appropriate tab to create your wiki, or click "Create Account" to begin the process for creating an account. |
Step Two:
After you click create account, you are brought to the following page to register. You have two options to create an account.
The first is to enter in all of your information where you can select an "alias" or username of your choice. Be sure to enter in all information and then hit "Get me a free account." If you select an alias that is already used, you will be prompted with a note to select a different user name. The second way to create an account is to log in with your Facebook account, if you have one. Wikidot will not modify your Facebook profile or post any information on your behalf without your acceptance. Please select a method to create an account. |
Step Three:
|
Once you create an account, you will be prompted to check your email box to confirm the account you just created. Log on to your email account in which you used to create the Wikidot account. Locate the Wikidot.com - Email Verification email and open it up. Click the URL link provided to confirm your account. After you confirm your account, you will automatically be brought to the homepage of Wikidot. |
Step Four & Step Five:
Step Four: Log in to your new Wikidot account by clicking "Sign In" located in the top right corner of the page. Step Five: Log on using your new user name or your email address in which you created the account. Enter in the password you created. If you are using a shared computer, do not check "Sign me out if I change IP address. Click "Sign in." |
|
Step Six:
|
Once you log in to your account, you will be prompted to name your wiki. Enter in a title for your wiki along with any taglines you would like to create. In addition, create your web address, which will be "your name".wikidot.com. Select your interface language and then choose a template. There are many templates in which you can choose from. Select the one that best meets your needs! After you name your wiki, scroll down. You will be prompted to select the "Access Policy." This will allow you to determine the setting of your wikipage and who will have access to it. Also, please check the box that you have read the Terms and Agreements. Once complete, click "Get my Wikidot site" to create your wiki! |
Step Eight:
|
Once you click the "edit" page, you will be able to edit the content of your homepage. The toolbars located above the editable document are where you will select the options you wish to include. The first row is designed to change the look of your font. You can change your heading, as well as bold, italicize, underline, and strike through your text. The second row of toolbars allows you to add a horizontal line, add a table, include a table of contents, add URLs and links, include images, add custom HTML, and more! The third row allows you to add numbered or bulleted lists and indent them, definitions, footnotes, math equations, bibliography blocks, and bibliography citations. This wiki software program uses wiki syntax, which is the language used to write the wiki pages. It is a bit more complex compared to its counterparts, Wikispaces. For reference about how to write syntax other than what is presented in the toolbox, please visit the following link Quick Reference Guide. If you wish to have a more comprehensive overview of the capabilities of Wikidot, please visit Documentation & Help. Remember: Click "Save" to save the content of your wiki page! |
Step Ten:
|
It is now time to add content to your newly developed wiki page. You can add additional content to your page to make it more beneficial. You can add links, files, and tables. In addition, you can add media by embedding each into your wiki. When editing your page, use the toolbar buttons above to add these items. Wikidot offers an abundance of media supported by HTML, which can be easily embedded into your wiki. Audio and video, images, maps, social services, office tools, widgets, web tools, and slideshow presentations can easily be embedded. Please find some of the many that can be included using Wikidot.
Remember to click "save" after you edit your page!
|
Step Eleven:
One critical feature of Wikidot includes the ability to manage your wiki. You can manage the content of your wiki, who views it and has permissions to it, and other settings, such as customization. In addition, Wikidot offers a variety of tools to help manage your wiki. To manage your wiki, select "My Account" in the top right corner. Then click "Sites." You will then see the site you have created. Under "Role: Master Admin," it will say "admin:manage" where you will click to manage your wiki. |
Step Twelve:
|
After you click "Admin:Manager" you will be brought to a screen with many options located in the left margin of the page to manage content, people, and settings.
With Wikidot you can edit the content regarding the pages, files associated with your pages, tags, and templates. You can manage your pages general settings, permissions, your custom domain, and secure access. You can also edit the appearance of your wiki where you can change the look and color! In addition, Wikidot allows you to edit the page templates, autonumbering of your pages, members, forums & discussions, and recent changes made. It also allows you to manage page ratings, notifications, backup, abuse of your page, and much more! If at any time you need assistance with managing your site, you can visit the Help & Documentation site or the Wikidot.com Community Site. You can create all different kinds of customizations for your entire wiki or per page. It is completely up to you and your needs! |
